Title: Methods for separating the noise from the wheels and track during a train pass-by

Abstract: Rolling noise is produced by vibration of the wheels and track, induced by their combined surface roughness. It is important to know the relative contributions of the different sources, as this affects noise control strategies as well as acceptance testing of new rolling stock. After reviewing the origins of rolling noise, several experimental techniques are described that aim to separate the wheel and track components of rolling noise from pass-by measurements. The development of these methods and their experimental validation using field tests are described. Comparisons are shown for three test cases, a metro train, a regional train and a high-speed train. The various methods agree reasonably well in terms of overall trends although the largest differences are found at low frequencies.

Biography: David Thompson has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge and a PhD from the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton, UK. He worked at British Rail Research in Derby, UK and TNO in the Netherlands before joining ISVR in 1996 where he is now Professor of Railway Noise and Vibration. His research covers all aspects of railway noise and vibration, including rolling noise, curve squeal, ground vibration, bridge noise and aerodynamic noise. He is the main author of the TWINS software for predicting rolling noise. He has written over 230 journal papers and over 300 conference papers. His book on Railway Noise and Vibration was published by Elsevier in 2008; a new edition is to be published in 2024. In 2018 he was awarded the Rayleigh medal by the Institute of Acoustics.
